Eagle girls beat Vikings

UNIONTOWN, Kan. -- In their final home appearance of the season here Friday, Uniontown's girls took a 57-24 victory over Northeast in a Three Rivers League contest.

Uniontown's boys were not as fortunate, falling to the Vikings, 64-54.

Both teams were swept by Oswego in make-up league games here Thursday.

Eagle girls (3-3 TRL, 8-9 overall) outscored Northeast 14-5 in the first quarter and led 34-13 at the half. The Vikings (2-3, 6-10) made only 3 field goals in the game.

Breanna Esslinger led Uniontown with 12 points.

Eagle boys (1-5, 5-12) trailed 15-6 after one and could never catch up. Brenton Esslinger had 12 points for UHS while Robert Kuns and Dakota Wiley each added 11.

Thursday: Oswego girls 47, Uniontown 39.

The second-place Indians (5-1, 11-6) pulled away in the second half, outscoring the Eagles 24-16.

"My girls really gave a good effort," Uniontown head coach Ken Holt said. "We just had trouble making shots in the third and fourth quarters. But this (was) no time to hang your head since we played again (Friday)."

Hope Jurgensen was the only double-digit scorer for Uniontown with 13 points. She also had 11 rebounds. Thursday: Oswego boys 73, Uniontown 60.

While the Eagles had their highest scoring total of the season, the 73 points were also they most they have allowed.

The league-leading Indians (6-0, 15-2) won the game in the third quarter, outscoring Uniontown 15-8. In every other quarter, the Eagles were within 1 to 3 points.

Esslinger led UHS with 17 points. Wiley and Ryan Ramsey followed with 11 each and Zach Travis added 10.

The Eagles play three times next week. Monday, they will be at Marmaton Valley for a make-up league doubleheader. Tuesday, they travel to Southern Coffey County for a non-league twinbill. Thursday, they place make-up league games at Chetopa to close out the regular season.
