3 earn medals at Rose Hill

ROSE HILL -- Three Fort Scott High School wrestlers earned medals at the two-day Rose Hill Invitational here over the weekend.

Jacob Durossette finished second in the 125-pound weight class. Tyler Sharp was fourth at 112 and John Metcalf placed sixth at 160.

Four other Tigers competed but did not place.

"We at times just didn't finish matches to victory," Fort Scott head coach David Brown said. "I see our Rose Hill experience as an opportunity to finalize things we need to work on for the peak run to Regionals and State."

Durossette (28-13 on the season with 13 pins) received two byes in the championship bracket before finally taking on Beau Johnson of McPherson in the quarterfinals, where he recorded a pinfall. He went on to take a 12-3 major decision over Caleb White of Mulvane in the semifinals. In the finals, he lost to Andale's Jake Gentzler, 6-1.

Sharp (25-11, 13) drew a first-round bye then pinned Arkansas City's Michael Love in the first period of the second-round match. He took a 7-4 decision over Jake Wilson of Rose Hill in the quarters but lost to Concordia's Brade Hake, who is ranked No. 3 in Class 4A, 7-5 in the semifinals.

In consolation, Sharp won a 6-4 decision over Ben Lightfoot of Andover Central. Kaden Kretzer of McPherson recorded a technical fall in the third-place match.

Metcalf (25-13, 8) drew a first-round bye but then lost to Brad Wagner of Hutchinson, ranked No. 2 in Class 6A, by pin.

In consolation, Metcalf won a 4-2 decision over Aaron Elsasser of McPherson and pinned Sam Watt of Caney Valley. Next came a 4-1 decision over Tyler Kidwell of Chanute.

In the consolation semifinals, Metcalf lost in a rematch with Wagner, 14-1. Then Drake Spellman of Augusta took a 7-0 decision in the fifth-place match.

Victor Hughes (28-11, 15) was 1-2 at 135 pounds. He drew two byes before dropping a 4-2 decision to Andale's Kyle Armstrong, ranked No. 5 in Class 4A. In consolation, Hughes took a 9-0 major decision over Ark City's Otey Spires before he was eliminated on a 4-2 decision by Travis Bishop of Rose Hill.

John Hughes (13-12, 10) was 1-2 at 140. He received a bye then defeated Matt Anderson of McPherson on a 12-2 major decision. He lost in the quarterfinals to Jake Umschied of Andover Central by pin and was eliminated on a 5-4 decision to Chad Klauman of Chanute.

Dane Cummings (21-16, 16) received a first-round bye at 189 and then pinned Dalton Clark of McPherson. He was pinned by Eastin Dockers of Rose Hill in the quarterfinals and had to concede an injury default to James Loughmiller of Wellington.

Brendon Blackburn (14-12, 7) drew a first-round bye then was pinned by McPherson's Andrew Archer and eliminated on a 7-3 decision by Augusta's Colby Willis.

The Tigers will wrestle for the final time at home this season Thursday night when Chanute and Columbus visit for a Southeast Kansas League triangular that will begin at 5:30 p.m.
