James Raymond Stoughton, 69, resident of Mapleton, Kan., died Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2011, at the Veteran's Administration Hospital, Kansas City, Mo. He was born Nov. 11, 1941, in Fort Scott, Kan., the son of Ellis Fredrick Stoughton and Mary Elizabeth Blair Stoughton. He grew up on the farm in Mapleton, Kan. He graduated from Blue Mound High School in the class of 1959. He joined the Navy in 1960, serving four years active duty, and two years in the reserves. He served in Italy, Spain, Greece and the Mediterranean. He served aboard the U.S.S. Holder in the North Atlantic. He also served in England, Germany, Norway, Holland and Ireland. He then joined the Raytown, Mo., police department, from 1964 to 1966. He moved to Fort Scott and joined the Fort Scott Police Department. Later he worked for the Bourbon County Sheriff's department. In 1988, he attended Fort Scott Community College truck driving school. He then worked as a truck driver for various companies. James enjoyed fishing, hunting, and spending time with family and friends. He was an especially good cook; known for his signature barbecue sauce. He was a member of the V.F.W.
