Greyhounds swept at Cowley

ARKANSAS CITY -- Fort Scott Community College's basketball team were swept by Cowley College in a Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division doubleheader here Saturday night.

Fort Scott's women lost to Cowley, 68-47. Greyhound men lost to the Tigers, 66-54.

Both Cowley teams are tied for first place in the East. The women (6-0, 13-5) are tied with nationally-ranked Independence (6-0, 18-0). Tiger men (5-1, 14-4) are in a three-way tie with Coffeyville (16-2) and Independence (13-5).

Each of Fort Scott's teams are tied for eighth-place in the 10-team East. 'Hound women (1-5, 4-14) are tied with Neosho County (3-15) while the men (1-5, 2-15) are tied with Allen County (4-13). Allen County's teams will visit Arnold Arena for a conference doubleheader Wednesday night. The women's game tips off at 5:30 p.m. with the men to follow at about 7:30. Red Devil women are last in the East at 0-6, 2-15.

Cowley men 66, Fort Scott 54.

Julian Mills scored a career-high 20 points for the Greyhounds. Robert Mason was the only other Fort Scott player in double figures with 10 points.

Tyrus McGee scored 16 points while James Watson added 13 and Romel Kemp chipped in with 10 for the Tigers, who shot 53 percent from the field on 26 of 49 and outrebounded Fort Scott, 32-25.

The Greyhounds made 21 of 52 field-goal attempts for 40 percent.

Cowley led 44-22 at the half.

Cowley women 68, Fort Scott 47.

Maylisa Johnson scored 17 points for Cowley as she made 7 of 12 shots from the field. Arianni Silva hit on 5 three-point shots as she added 15 points.

Jolee Sharp led the Greyhounds with 17 points as she went 7 of 10 from the field. Kendra Mattox added 11 points and hauled down a team-leading 9 rebounds. Ashlie Baker scored 10 points.

Cowley made 24 of 65 field-goal attempts for 37 percent and also converted 13 of 17 free throws. Fort Scott shot 35 percent on 17 of 49, making only 1 of 13 3-point shots. The Greyhounds also made 12 of 24 free throws.

The Tigers outrebounded the 'Hounds, 43-41. Cowley stats also showed the teams committing a total of 55 turnovers, 32 by Fort Scott.

Cowley held a 33-16 halftime lead.
