Hounds post road sweep

Tuesday, December 7, 2010

TRENTON, Mo. -- Fort Scott Community College's men broke a 13-game losing streak as part of a Greyhound sweep of North Central College here Monday night.

'Hound men (1-11) took a 68-62 victory. Fort Scott's women (2-9) started the evening off with a 53-47 win over the Pirates (8-3).

Fort Scott High graduate Jolee Sharp led the women with 23 points and 11 rebounds. Ashlie Baker followed for the 'Hounds with 9 points.

Jordan Ewigman was the only Pirate in double figures with 13 points.

Sharp made 9 of 13 shots from the floor while picking up 2 steals and recording 4 blocks.

"Jolee has been struggling the last couple of games and it was so nice to see her playing again," Fort Scott head women's coach Diana Couch said. "She is just so smooth when she lets the game come to her. She had been in a bit of a funk and really needed this type of performance to get her on track.

"After the game she was like 'Are you sure? I really had that good a game? It didn't feel like it.' All I can say is that's Jolee Sharp."

It was the third time the Greyhounds had stepped on the court in as many days. They played the first half of their game with Johnson County at Arnold Arena Saturday afternoon, then the second half on Sunday after a damaged backboard had to be replaced.

"It's been a crazy last couple of days and games," Couch said. "I went into the locker room in pre-game to give them this big speech, but instead I just gave them a reality check. (I said) 'we are as low as we can get right now and the only way to go is up. So make a choice, ladies: Be happy where you're at or make a choice to show everyone what each and every one of you are capable.'"

Greyhound women will face Cottey College at 6 p.m. Friday night. The team will be collecting donations for Toys For Tots. Fans will be admitted with a $2 discount if they make a donation. This will be the last home game for the 'Hounds before the holiday break.

No further details were available from the men's game as they were set to play on the road again Tuesday night, this time at State Fair in Sedalia, Mo. They'll also have road games Dec. 17 at Florissant Valley and Dec. 18 at Southwestern Illinois.

The last time the men had won prior to Monday night was on February 20 last season when they defeated Labette, 65-61 at Arnold Arena. The Greyhounds also broke a 22-game road losing streak. Tuesday's game at State Fair was their last one prior to the holiday break. They don't play again until January 5 versus Labette at Parsons.
