Deadlne for Christmas Parade entries coming soon

Monday, November 15, 2010

The annual downtown Christmas parade, sponsored by the Fort Scott Area Chamber of Commerce Downtown Division, has been scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 30.

The theme for this year's parade is Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree. The parade will follow a traditional route by starting at the corner of Main and Third streets, continuing north on Main Street before turning west on Wall Street to National Avenue, where the parade will end.

This year, the Mayor's Christmas tree, which is usually placed near Skubitz Plaza, will be placed on the grassy area near the corner of Wall and Main streets where the Miller and Nelson blocks once stood. Chamber officials said this change will make the grassy area more festive for the holiday season and create more room downtown for other activities planned in conjunction with the parade.

Prizes will be awarded to first, second and third place entries in the parade. Each entry's coordination with the parade theme will be considered. Chamber officials said they encourage entries to play music and display an array of lights to celebrate the holiday season. Deadline for entry into the parade is Monday, Nov. 22.

Other activities scheduled in addition to the parade include the annual lighting of the Mayor's Christmas tree, a live Nativity scene, the Scottish Rite Temple Chili Feed, the Fort Scott Farmer's Market and musical entertainment. Any person or group wishing to perform Christmas music around the tree should contact the chamber at (620) 223-3566.
