Volleyball fourth at Louisburg

LOUISBURG -- Fort Scott High School's volleyball team went to a tough Louisburg Tournament here Saturday and came away with just one victory in five matches.

Fort Scott (16-9) hosts Labette County and Independence Thursday night for a Southeast Kansas League triangular as the Tigers look to keep pace with Chanute and Pittsburg atop the league standings. Fort Scott, Chanute and Pittsburg are all 2-0 in league play while Independence (16-5 overall) and Labette County (15-4) are two of the three teams that are 1-1 in the SEK.

In the first match at Louisburg, the Tigers lost to Carbondale-Santa Fe Trail in two games, 25-21, 25-16. Mallory Shelton had 5 blocks, 5 aces and 5 blocks in the match while Kelsey Middleton had 3 blocks and 3 kills and Megan McDermed had 3 kills.

Louisburg defeated the Tigers in three in the next match, 22-25, 25-17, 25-14. Shelton had 7 kills and 7 blocks while Jenna Campbell served 12 aces.

Fort Scott' lone victory was in its next match against Bonner Springs, 25-11, 25-8. Shelton served 10 aces and had 5 blocks. Kori Allen led with 3 kills.

That was followed by a match with Class 6A Blue Valley North, which received votes in the Kansas Volleyball Association poll last week. The Mustangs won 25-12, 25-16. Shelton had 3 kills, 3 aces and 3 blocks. Marlliss Allen served 4 aces.

The Tigers went on to the third-place match where Basehor-Linwood took a 25-19, 25-17 sweep. Shelton had 5 kills and 3 aces and McDermed had 3 kills.

Thursday's action begins at 5 p.m.
