SHIRLEY JEAN (WARZEL) KEAL

Shirley Jean (Warzel) Keal, 86, of Parsons, died at 12:09 a.m., Sunday, Aug. 15, 2010 at the Olathe Medical Center in Olathe. She had been in failing health and had been at a nursing home in the Olathe area the past several months.

She was born Dec. 24, 1923 at Mound City, the daughter of Gus and Grace (Good) Warzel. She grew up in Fort Scott and graduated from Fort Scott High School and Fort Scott Junior College.

During World War II she was employed by the Veterans Administration in Wichita.

On Jan. 11, 1946 she married Charles C. Keal, in Fort Scott.

During the time Mr. Keal was in the service, she worked in various government jobs in the Washington D.C. area. They lived in Fort Scott until moving to Parsons in 1957. Mr. Keal preceded her in death on Sept. 24, 2001.

Mrs. Keal was a homemaker while her children were growing up. Later she worked as office manager for Kansas Claims Service, the business owned by the Keal family.

She enjoyed bowling and was a member of the Parsons USBC Women's Bowling Association formally the Parsons Women's Bowling Association for 43 years. Shirley served on many league committees and was past president of the Friday night Sta-Laters league for 15 years. Shirley bowled in 42 Parsons USBC WBA local association tournaments, 36 Kansas State USBC WBA tournaments and 3 WIBC national tournaments. She received the Kansas State USBC WBA "Grand Duchess" award in 1994 and was inducted in the Parsons USBC WBA Hall of Fame in 1997 for Meritorious Service.

She served on the Election board for many years and was very interested in community activities. She was a Lady Elk for many years with Parsons Elks Lodge No 527.

She enjoyed meeting with friends and planning and attending Fort Scott High School class reunions.

Survivors include four sons: Charles M. "Mike" Keal and his wife Florence, Parsons; Robert D. "Doug" Keal and his wife Teresa, Cherryvale; Gregory J. Keal and his wife Kristina, Olathe; Steven S. Keal, Parsons; one daughter Sue Ann Harris and her husband Greg, Olathe; 14 grandchildren, Kealey Mae Harris, Olathe; Carlee Todd, Wichita; Courtney Jarrett, Pittsburg; Travis Keal and his wife Michele, Shawnee; Aaron "Eemo" Keal and his wife Schuyler, Parsons; Joshua Keal and his wife Jessica, Prairie Village; Rhiannon Keal, Parsons; Tyler Keal, Parsons; Rylan Keal, Olathe; Isaac Keal, Olathe; Alex Keal, Olathe; Chelsea Keal, Cherryvale; Wyatt Keal, Cherryvale; Morgan Martin, Cherryvale.

Also surviving are her great-grandchildren, Austin, Zachary and Maryn Keal, Shawnee; Taylor and Mallory Keal, Prairie Village; Henry and Joseph Keal, Parsons; Jacob Keal, Parsons; and a sister, Patricia Keating, Fort Scott.

Preceding her in death besides her husband were two brothers, Robert "Butch" Warzel and Thaddeus "Jack" Warzel and two sisters, Thais Warzel and Edith Gorman.

Funeral services for Mrs. Keal will be at 10 a.m., Thursday at the Fort Scott National Cemetery in Fort Scott.

A Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m., Wednesday, at the Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Parsons. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Memorials are suggested to the Labette Community College Athletic Department, the First Christian Church of Parsons or the St. Patrick School of Parsons. They may be left at or sent to the funeral home at Box 942, Parsons, KS 67357.
