After being removed from the budget, the city has decided to donate money toward the annual fireworks presentation presented by the Elk's Lodge.

With the annual fireworks presentation just a month away, the Fort Scott Elks Lodge 579 had requested the annual donation of $2,500 from the city during Tuesday evening's meeting, however the donation was removed from the 2010 budget. The commissioners were in support of the event but not sure if the money was available in the budget.

"This a Fort Scott celebrations ... not an Elks' celebration," Commissioner Gary Bukowski said. "Our contribution is essential to make this event successful."

Commissioner Sam Mason said the commission needed to discuss the issue because it may seem like a small amount, but personnel were cut from the budget and they were not rehired.

Exalted Ruler of Elks Lodge 579 James Wood said the city was the top contribution to the event. He added, the city's contribution of $2,500 covered about 25 percent of the event's expenses.

The money for the contribution is available in the city's general fund through a higher cash carryover than anticipated as well as profit from the city's sale of surplus equipment.

Other business conducted by the commission included:

* Approved a payment of $36,146 to SeKan Asphalt Services for work complete at the Fort Scott Municipal Airport.

* Approved a $1,000 change order to the project for the replacement of a box culvert. The change order is to replace the existing concrete encasement. The total cost of the project is now $69,993.

* Set public hearing date for the alleged unsafe and danger structure located at 619 S. Ransom and the accessory structures at 706 S. Couch and 1316 E. Oak. The public hearings were set for 6:15 p.m., July 20.

* Waived the fireworks ordinance for July 4.

* Renewed the lease contract on the First Source building.

* Approved the facade application from Cheney Witt Chapel, Inc. for repairs to stucco on the exterior of the building. The cost of the project is estimated at $16,294. As per the city's facade grant program, the city will fund $500 for the project which will come out of the Phoenix Fund.

* Approved an $8,740 change order to the street and curb improvements at Country Club Hills. The change order is for the installation of a curb inlet near the southwest corner of the property at 501 Meadow Lane along with an outlet pipe and appurtenances. The additional cost is expected to be covered because there was not as much work in other areas as anticipated.

* Approved the demolition of the cornice on the Tribune/Monitor building, 6 E. Wall and the installation of a temporary flashing to prevent water leakage.
