Colgan earns return trip to 2-1A State

UNIONTOWN -- Pittsburg Colgan will be going back to the Class 2-1A State Softball Tournament after its pitchers spun back-to-back shutouts in the Uniontown Class 2-1A Regional Tournament here Friday.

Colgan (22-1) first shut out fourth-seeded Marmaton Valley 8-0. Then they defeated host Uniontown 11-0 in five innings in the championship.

"Colgan is very good team and they completely overwhelmed us. both on offense and defense," Uniontown head coach Alan Shinn said. "We only had one batter reach base and that was on a walk. They definitely were the better team."

The Eagles (12-6) advanced to the finals with a 4-1 victory over Jayhawk-Linn in the second semifinal.

Colgan's Katie Hayes held Marmaton Valley to 8 hits in the opener while striking out 8. Annie Dellasega had two hits for the Panthers, a double and a triple.

Tayler Shook was the winning pitcher and had 2 doubles for the Eagles in the other semifinal. She held the Jayhawks to 3 hits -- one each by Jessie McGown, MacKenzy Sisson and Kevon Clark -- walked 4 and struck out 5.

Tiffany Poyner, Hope Jurgensen, Rayma Ridge and Audrey Dixon had the other hits for the Eagles.

In the finals, Colgan's Morgan Gilmore allowed just the one walk while striking out 6. Caitlyn Decker had 3 hits while Hayes and Allison McCormick had 2 each. Hayes had a double and a triple.
