May is Older Americans Month

Older Americans Month is observed each year during the month of May. It was first established in l963 when about two million Americans, less than 10 percent of the population, were 65 or older. Almost one third of older Americans were living in poverty and few programs existed to help meet their needs. President John F. Kennedy designated May as "Senior Citizens Month." In l980, under President Jimmy Carter, the month was renamed to "Older Americans Month."
