Wednesday, April 14, 2010

The Ladies Retreat held in Arcadia Christian Church on March 17 was a very special treat for the 27 ladies who attended. This number incuded Pastor Chas Cable who was in and out during the day in order to hear his daughter, Cherri Walrod from Eudora, Kan., give the two lessons.

After registration and breakfast, praise and worship was led by Janelle Bunny, Liberal, Mo. Several skits were held throughout the day including one by the younger ladies who attended.

Question and answer periods were held following the speakers lessons.

Pamper time was used for relaxation by the ladies dipping their hands in warm wax, feeling the warmth and peeling it off and using hand cream.

Following a soup, fruit and cheese roll lunch, it was craft time led by Christie Parrish assisted by her granddaughter, Allyson Dugan. Each lady decorated a greeting card to be sent to a special friend and a bookmark for her own Bible.

The day ended with more praise and worship and thanks to Patty Peterson and Betty Dehn and their helpers for a fine day of activities.

Other far-away out-of-town guests were Sandia Wallace, Richmond, Mo., and Shirley Coen, Napoleon, Mo. Also from Arma were Dorothy Heckert, Emma Hartzfeld and Connie Morelli. Liberal, Mo., was represented by Kendra Bearden and Judy Rawlings. Kristin Girard came over from Joplin and Janet VanLeeuwen, attended from St. Paul, Kan.

Arcadians were pleased to see the picture of Shirley Guthrie in the weekend paper, when she attended the Oscar Party given by the Research Club in Nevada. The party included a red carpet, paparzzi and Hollywood Glamor at the March 25 gathering for Nevada's oldest social club, now in its 102nd year. The Guthries are former Arcadians.

Spook Hunters search for old empty homes so they can see if there are spooks who come back to haunt the relatives of folks who once lived in the empty homes. The ones in Arcadia on Saturday evening were taking pictures of a home with permission of the owner.

Gary Peterson was dinner guest of Herman Tyler on Saturday evening when they dined in Pittsburg at Jim's Steak House. In turn, Sunday after the church dinner, Gary took a carry in dinner to Herman's home.

Two inscribed cakes were presented to the birthday celebrants at the dinner in Christian Church Sunday at noon. Walter Foulk was honored with his cake by Willa Cable and Christie Parrish did the honors for Vera Parrish. Both honorees gave their birthday offerings during the church service. An early birthday visitor for Walter was enjoyed when his cousin, Raymond Grace came from Carthage, Mo.

On Easter Sunday, Walter was pleased to have his nephew, John Foulk of Fort Scott, attend church with him in Arcadia and enjoyed dinner out together.

Lilly Coonrod served as hostess to the other four ladies who atttended Class No. l0 on St. Patrick's Day. She told of her trips she and husband Jerry Coorod have been on to different sea ports and showed pictures. Then one by one she showed us many pieces of beautiful jewelry she has: Rings, earrings, bracelets and such. To Judy Rawlings, Carole Garrison, Patty Peterson and Mary V. Shead, she gave each a gold link bracelet that she had in her collection. She also gave each a scrubbie made of sponge and in the shape of a beautiful flat easter egg. An Easter decorated table was set for refreshment time when Lilly blessed the yellow cake with pink frosting served with cups of various hot tea like at tea time on the ships. Nuta, chocolate eggs and peanut butter cups were passed. Patty Peterson will host the April 21 meeting.
