Hammond UMC to celebrate 125 years

Friday, March 26, 2010

The Hammond United Methodist Church will be celebrating it's 125th anniversary with a special service and events on March 28.

The day will begin with refreshments and fellowship at 9:30 a.m. which will lead to a worship service at 10 a.m. lead by Pastor Janet Myers. Following the service Sunday school will begin at 11 a.m. Lunch will follow at 12:30 p.m. and a program of memories in which special music is planned will begin at 1 p.m.

The Hammond United Methodist Church has been serving the community for many years. The first Sunday school was held in the Maple Grove Schoolhouse. The first board meeting was held in the home of Peter M. Orr in 1883. The church was completed in 1884 on land donated by William McIntosh.

From 1931 through 1989, the church has had a number of improvements to its use and appearance. They include the addition of a social hall and kitchen, new pews and cushions, hardwood floors, a new organ, a new bathroom, and ceiling fans. The church is presently growing and planning to serve the Hammond community and God for many years to come.
