Local churches collect items to send to Haiti

Nevada, Mo. -- A group that sends missions to Haiti and is supported by several local churches is collecting items for the relief efforts in Haiti. Jamie Sisseck said the group is supported by churches in Hume, Richards and Fort Scott, among others.

"The Northwest Haiti Christian Mission is supported by several churches," Sisseck said. "The church in Hume does, Richards and Fort Scott and many others."

The group has been going to Haiti for many years, Sisseck said her grandparents had participated in mission trips.

"I couldn't say how old this group is, I know my grandparents went a long time ago," Sisseck said. "I know they've been doing it since I was a young girl."

The list of items is fairly short, but the items will go a long way to alleviating problems. Hand-operated can openers, toothpaste, toothbrushes, gallon zip top bags, towels, triple antibiotic ointment, bandages, gauze (sterilized if possible), and any non-perishable food items.

"The expiration dates should be at least six months away," Sisseck said.

The items are being collected at Family Video and Sisseck said they need to be there by Monday, Feb. 1.

"The truck is leaving the second and I need to get everything over to Fort Scott so we're asking that people get the items to us by Monday," Sisseck said.

People bringing items to the Family Video in Nevada will receive a free rental from the store.

"We're donating a $1 movie rental free when someone brings items in," Sisseck said.
