Part two: Falling acorns and flying turkeys
Note: This is the final installment of a two-part series.
Our son Rob had come up the night before (Friday) to go bow hunting and sight in his deer rifle.
While we were having breakfast the next morning, he suddenly yells "turkeys." They were right out in our yard. We have them back in our woods, but have never seen them up in our yard. Fifteen in all. BUT...what they were interested in were the acorns! There were many that had fallen since Bob had raked them.
Led by an old hen, they all followed wherever she went. Another big hen brought up the rear. In between were jakes and young hens. They kicked and scratched, just having a feast. When they had had their fill, they looked around for dessert. Why, of course: Our crab apple tree!
I had picked all that I wanted for crab apple jelly. Most of the rest had fallen to the ground. They laboriously waddled over to the tree and again were gluttons. They slurped and chomped and before we knew it, they filed out of the yard, single file and were gone. We thought that was the last time we would see them in our yard.
But the next afternoon we were again treated to not 15, but 19 back up in our yard. They were on the opposite side of the yard where there was an oak tree that Bob hadn't raked under yet. Again they attacked those acorns like crazy. We live on a very busy highway, and that oak isn't too far from the road. Well, that old hen decided it looked better on the other side of the road and began leading the flock up to the edge of the road.
Well ... when they got up there, here comes a car lickedly split, just as they are attempting to cross. The car comes to a screeching halt, and they run back down into the ditch. But no, that hen was going to have her way. Back up to the side of the road she went with all of the flock again following her. Bob was holding his breadth, scared to death that "his" turkeys might soon be scattered all over the highway.
This time, she seemed to look up and down the road, and then flew right across the road. Well....the others followed suit, as each one got up to the road, they seemed to look, then flew across 'til they were all on the other side. A couple of cars came by and slowed down and watched as if to say, "I can't believe this." As far as we know they are still around. Haven't seen any carcasses or feathers.
Bob has decided that his "get rich" acorn scheme wasn't what it was cracked up to be (no pun intended).
