Tiger soccer pounds Columbus, 7-1

Monday, October 12, 2009

Cold, wind, mist. None of those things really bothered Fort Scott High's soccer team as they pounced Columbus 7-1 in Southeast Kansas League play at Ellis Park Monday.

The game was originally scheduled for Thursday but postponed due to the condition of the field.

The Tigers (5-2 SEK, 7-5 overall) scored 5 first-half goals on just 8 shots on goal. Columbus (0-5, 2-7) had just 5 shots on goal in the entire game. Tiger goalkeeper Brett Allen only had to make 4 saves.

The first goal came just two minutes into the game as Garret Baugher steered in Matt Scharenberg's corner kick. Kholton Dwyer's header made it 2-0 just seven minutes later.

Jason Trejo scored on a free kick in the 16th minute of play. Baugher scored his second goal in the 24th minute as he steered in a rebound of Josh Buller's free kick, Buller himself made it 5-0 when he scored 30 seconds before halftime.

Chris McAllister made it 6-0 in the 64th minute. Columbus' Nick Holman scored the Titans' only goal in the 67th minute.

Chris Herman provided the game's final tally when he took a pass from McAllister in the 78th minute and put in the net.

For the game, Fort Scott took 31 total shots, 17 of them on goal.

The Tigers will host Coffeyville Thursday at Ellis Park, weather permitting. There are four regular-season games remaining with a four-team tournament at Coffeyville Saturday and a match with Riverton on Oct. 20.

If the Tigers can finish the season with a winning record, it's very likely that they may be able to host a playoff game for the first time in the history of the program.
