Grace Louise Buford, 81, of Fort Scott, died Tuesday evening, Sept. 29, 2009 at the Girard Medical Center in Girard, Kansas.

She was born Aug. 31, 1928, in Redfield, Kan., the daughter of Arthur Harrison and Nola Elizabeth (Inman) Pitts.

She married Ralph Edward Buford on Oct. 7, 1947 in Bentonville, Ark. He preceded her in death on Nov. 20, 1992.

Grace lived on Native Road (Stringtown Road) from May of 1958 until Sept. 29, 2008 when she moved into Fort Scott Manor.

In her younger years she worked at Aarons Egg Packing Plant and later at Arkhaven Nursing Home.

She was a homemaker and enjoyed her grandkids and great grandkids, and especially the great granddaughter Madison, who arrived three months early.

She is survived by two daughters, Sharon A Jones and husband, Jerry of Butler, Mo., and Patty Peterson of Fort Scott, three sisters; Rowena Hines of Ohio, Juanita Schroder and Josephine Michael, both of Fort Scott, two brothers, Kenneth "Pete" Pitts of Olathe, Kan., and Calvin Pitts of Fort Scott, three grandchildren; Molly A. Harryman and husband, Johnny of Fort Scott, Shelly L Phillips and husband, Aaron of Hepler, Kansas, and Jeremy E. Jones and wife Crystal of Portland, Texas, and four great grandchildren, Lucas Harryman of Fort Scott, Madison Wilkinson of Hepler, Kan., Jonathan and Aidan Jones of Portland Texas.

In addition to her husband, Ralph, she was preceded in death by her parents, a sister; Helen Hood, four brothers; Joseph, John, James and Harold "Barney" Pitts, two half brothers; Ed and David Lusk, and one grandson; Bryan Lee Peterson.

Funeral services for Grace Buford will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Konantz-Cheney Funeral Home with Rev. Kevin Moyers officiating.

Burial will be in the Fort Scott National Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. until 8 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 1, 2009 at the Konantz-Cheney Funeral Home.
