For the first time ever, Fort Scott Community College will host a math relays contest this fall.

This contest, which is scheduled to take place Nov. 6, is open to all area high school students. To enroll students, instructors can visit www.fortscott.edu to fill out an online registration form.

The contest will consist of 10 individual events. Students will be divided into grade levels; ninth, tenth, eleventh, and twelfth. Medals with ribbons will be awarded to first, second and third place finishers at each grade level on each test.

Kathy Malone, a math instructor at FSCC, is organizing the event.

"This is a great way to showcase Fort Scott Community College to local high school students and a perfect opportunity to highlight our math department," she said.

E-mails were sent out last spring to gauge interest in organizing the event and 17 schools responded positively to the idea. Organizers hope to make the contest an annual event, an FSCC statement said.

Contest sponsors include Zack Reynolds, Kiwanis Pioneer Chapter, Beta Sigma Phi, Keith and Joycelyn Malone, Bob and Barbara Eshelbrenner, and Wayne and Marge Stringer. All sponsors have been instrumental in the creation of the new event, the statement said.
