ALTOONA, Kan. -- Uniontown's volleyball team validated its recently-gained No. 5 ranking in the Kansas Volleyball Coaches Association Poll by sweeping Altoona-Midway and Oswego in Three Rivers League play Thursday night.

The Eagles (2-0 TRL, 8-1 overall) swept Midway, 25-14, 25-14. Abbie Smith had 14 kills in that match for Uniontown.

The scores against Oswego were 25-8, 25-14. Smith had another 14 kills and Jessie Camac had 5 kills.

"It was a good night for us," Uniontown head coach Jackie Hall said. "We wanted to start our league play off strong and we did. We are still working on our blocking and covering our hitters as well as blockers. But, overall, I was extremely pleased with what the team has accomplished."

The junior varsity Eagles played one match, which had to end in a split since Altoona-Midway has only one gym and the match had to end by 5:45 so the varsity matches could start at 6. Uniontown won the first game, 25-15, and lost the second, 25-22. Jessica Murrow served for 10 points.

The varsity Eagles will play in a non-league quadrangular at Riverton Thursday. Columbus will be one of the other teams there.

The JV Eagles will be at a tournament at Marmaton Valley Saturday and a quadrangular at Southeast-Cherokee Tuesday.
