Robert L. "Bob" Adams, 84, of rural Arcadia, died at 11:35 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 30, 2009 at Mt. Carmel Regional Medial Center at Pittsburg, Kan.

Mr. Adams was born Dec. 20, 1924 at Arcadia, the son of Bert and Tillie V. (Martin) Adams.

Bob was a retired businessman, cattleman and rancher.

Bob was raised in Arcadia and graduated from Arcadia High School in 1942.

He attended Kansas State Teachers College, now PSU, for one year, before being drafted into the Army on July 4, 1943 at Camp Roberts, Calif., and worked at Headquarters Division as a Tec Sergeant until being discharged on March 17, 1946.

Mr. Adams was a veteran of World War II.

After returning from the service, he went back to Kansas State Teachers College and received a degree in business administration.

He also went to work at the K&A Garage in Arcadia, a family business where he worked for 47 years.

Bob was a lifelong Arcadia resident.

He married Ava Mae Spurling on June 5, 1960 at the Arcadia Christian Church.

Bob was an 83 year member of the Arcadia Christian Church, where he served as superintendent and organist. He also attended the Arma United Methodist Church, was a 60 year 32 Degree Mason and was a member of the Scottish Rites in Fort Scott and the American Legion in Arcadia.

Survivors include his wife, Ava Mae of the home, Gerald Jr., Kevin and Gail Montee, who Bob considered his own, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2009 at the Arma United Methodist Church with the Rev. Don Foster and the Rev. Chris DeWelt officiating.

Burial will be in the family mausoleum at the Old Arcadia Cemetery near Arcadia.

Friends may call from 1 to 6 p.m., Tuesday, at the Bedene Funeral Home at Arma.

The family suggests memorials to the Mirza Shrine Transportation Fund or to the Arma United Methodist Church. Donations may be sent to or left at the Bedene Funeral Home, 517 E. Washington, Box 621, Arma, Kan., 66712.
