Money issues on commission agenda

The Fort Scott City Commissioner will have money on their minds during Tuesday evening's meeting.

Commissioners will be discussing the acceptance of a grant offer of $475,886 from the Federal Aviation Administration. The money will be used for improvements to the Fort Scott Municipal Airport, specifically the pavement of Runway 18/36. According to documentation provided by the city, the decision to accept or not must be made by July 31.

The commission will also discuss the authorization of Fort Scott Mayor Gary Bukowski to sign a letter of support for the Fort Scott Police Department's application for the Kansas Wireless Enhanced 911 Grant. The FSPD is applying for $50,710 to complete upgrades which began in 2001.

Commissioners will also be discussing the application of a grant which would fund 100 percent of a 17,000 square foot addition to Fire Station No. 1 at the Hawkins Public Safety Facility. The cost of the project is estimated over $2.1 million and will include a two-floor expansion as well as a full basement to be used for a secured evidence room and office for the records custodian, house vital computer and phone system equipment, records storage, as well as a public shelter.

Other items on Tuesday's agenda included:

* Approval of two Certificates of Appropriateness for new paint on the old Master Printers building located at 122 S. Main St. and new paint on the Captured Images building located at 118 S. Main St.

* A public hearing will be held at 6:15 p.m. regarding the repair or removal of the unsafe and dangerous structure located at 624 S. Broadway.

* Approval of allocation of $1,500 to Keyhole for new equipment

* Consideration of Professional Engineering Consultants, P.A. for a drainage study at the intersection of 7th Street and National Avenue.

* Authorization for Fort Scott to enter into a supplemental agreement between Bourbon County and Kansas Department of Transportation for the preparation of a corridor management plan for U.S. Highway 69

The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Commissioners Room at City Hall, 1 E. 3rd.
