Barlett medals; Smith reaches hurdles final

WICHITA, Kan. -- Uniontown's Colt Bartlett won a seventh-place medal at the Kansas Class 3A State Track and Field Championships here Friday. He earned it in shot put with a throw of 44 feet, 2 1/2 inches.

In the same event, Pleasanton's T.J. Davis finished with a mark of 44' 11 3/4" for eighth place, one spot away from a medal.

Uniontown junior Abbie Smith will be in today's final of the 100-meter hurdles as a result of her third-best time in the preliminaries. She finished second in her heat with a time of 16.13 seconds. Dayna Kuhlman of Oakley won that heat in 15.47 and Makayla Ladwig, a freshmen from Berean Academy in Elbing, had the best qualifying time of 15.84. The finals were scheduled for 9:30 a.m. this morning.

Bartlett finished 10th in discus with a throw of 126' 8" while teammate David Shank placed 112th at 124' 4". Skyler Martin of Pleasanton finished 15th at 117' 8".

Ben Dixon of Uniontown placed 13th in long jump with an effort of 18' 5 1/4". Freshman Jacy Ermel was 14th in girls' javelin at 94' 7".

Pleasanton's Cody Maloney tied for ninth place in high jump as he cleared 5' 10". Teammate Joey Shoopman was 15th after going over 5' 8".

Pleasanton's 4x100-meter relay team of Daniel Barner, Dakota Kern, Kolbee McKee and Maloney finished sixth in their heat with a time of 45.69 and were unable to make the finals. Their time was 10th-best overall with 45.52 the slowest that made finals.

While Smith is in the 100-meter hurdle final, she will not be in the 300-meter finals. She was sixth in her heat and 12th overall in 53.10 with 51.05 the slowest time to advance.

Dixon was 13th in the prelims of the 200-meter dash in 23.81 and did not advance to finals. Emily Aikins was 15th in the prelims of the girls' 200 in 27.92.
