Area residents who would like an opportunity to learn about the brave actions of historical characters can attend an upcoming performance by local students who earned their way into the National History Day Competition.

Beginning at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 2, the 13 students who won the state history day competition in April will be performing for area residents in the Fort Scott Community College Round Room, 2108 Horton.

At the performance, event attendees will have the opportunity to contribute to the students' National History Day fund, which will enable the group to make the trip to the College Park, Maryland on June 14-18 and compete in the national competition.

Three students from Fort Scott High School, Reanda Mims, Grant Stucky, and Keenan Gregory, will be performing their first place drama titled Recipe for Legacy: 35mm and a Wide Angle Lens." According to a press release from the Lowell Milken Education Center, the three FSHS students also won a $300 scholarship from the Kansas Council for History Education and were sponsored by the Lowell Milken Education Center.

Fort Scott Christian Heights students Theresa Schafer, Marcus Page, David Cox and Elizabeth Wallace will also be performing at the event. The four students, who will perform a skit called "Cyclone in Calico: A Nation in Her Wake," won the Freedom's Frontier National Heritage Area "Bleeding Kansas" award.

Also making appearances at the event will be FSCH students Austen Hansen, Jake Hansen, and Nathan Davolt, who won a $100 scholarship from the Smoky Hill Museum for their senior division Web site titled, "Henryk Slawik: The Man that Saved Thousands."

In addition, Kaitlyn Arnold, Alex Arnold and Beth Hill, FSCH, will be at the event representing their group exhibit board titled "Barney Ford: The Black Baron of Colorado."

The national competition involves the top 2,000 students from across the nation, out of more than 700,000 who enter the local competitions and advance to the state and national competitions. There were 52 schools represented at the state competition this year.
