Bulgarian's 38 points lead Tigers over 'Hounds

ARKANSAS CITY -- Six-foot Bulgarian Elena Yankova's 38-point outing led No. 23 Cowley to a 74-45 win over Fort Scott Community College in Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division play here Wednesday night.

The Greyhounds (0-2 East, 7-7 overall) shot only 33 percent from the field, making 20 of 60 field-goal attempts. They were two of 16 from three-point range and three of 13 at the free-throw line.

Cowley (2-0, 11-3) also outrebounded Fort Scott, 43-28.

Yankova made 14 of 22 shots from the field and went eight of nine at the line. No other Tiger scored more than seven points.

Fort Scott's Leondra Doomes-Stephens was the only other player in the game to reach double figured but her streak of 30-point games was broken at two. She finished with just 17 points on seven-of-22 shooting. She went into the contest as the Jayhawk Conference's leading scorer, averaging 22 points a game. No other player in the conference averages more than 17.8 points a game.

Valencia Kelly, coming off a 20-point outing Saturday against Coffeyville, and Monet Fernandes had eight points each for the 'Hounds.

Cowley shot 45 percent from the floor, making 26 of 58 field-goal attempts. The Tigers were also 18 of 24 at the free-throw line.

The Greyhounds will host Johnson County at 2 p.m. Saturday at Arnold Arena.

NOTE -- Fort Scott's men lost to No. 5 Cowley, 79-56, to fall to 1-1 in conference play and 7-7 overall. The Tribune had made arrangements with Cowley's athletic department to send over stats from that game but received only second-half stattistics and that final score.
