TOPEKA, Kan. -- State Senator-elect Bob Marshall (R-Ft. Scott) has been chosen to serve as vice chairman of the Senate Transportation Committee. The Senate Organization, Calendar and Rules Committee met yesterday at the capitol to choose committee chairs, vice chairs and ranking minority members.

Senate President Steve Morris, who also chairs OCR, stated, "I am pleased Senator-elect Marshall is willing to serve in a leadership position on this important committee. Although new to the Kansas Senate, Bob Marshall brings a wealth of experience and common sense to the process, and I am sure he will prove to be an asset to his committee and to the Senate."

Marshall has been an active member of the Highway 69 Committee for almost 10 years and also played an active role in SEK, Inc. for many years.

Marshall said, "Transportation is my passion. The Transportation Committee has the significant charge of crafting a new long-range comprehensive transportation plan for the state. I look forward to this challenge. Like Committee Chairman Dwayne Umbarger, I am from Southeast Kansas, and I will do all I can to ensure our part of the state is not forgotten. Good roads and bridges are lifelines for our citizens and our businesses."

Senate Majority Leader Derek Schmidt, R-Independence, commented, "Transportation is the key to the economic future in Southeast Kansas. Bob is now in a key position to help shape that future."

In November, Bob Marshall was elected to succeed Sen. Jim Barone who did not seek reelection. Marshall is beginning his first four-year term in the Kansas Senate where he will represent the 13th State Senate District. The 13th District includes Bourbon, Crawford and parts of Cherokee counties.

Marshall is a retired airline pilot and a retired Colonel in the U.S. Marine Corps with 33 years of service. For the past five years he served as Athletic Director at Fort Scott Community College. Marshall and his wife Judy will soon celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. They have three grown children and six grandchildren.
