Garage Sales yield bargains, 'dream dancing' music

Tuesday, July 15, 2008

It's that time of the year, garage sales galore, and I was raring to go. The Pittsville Record was full of garage sales. I looked them all over and mapped out the course that I would take. I decided to go to one on County Trunk Q across the road from the Homestead Golf Course. In fact, there were six of them all right in a row. I love those kind, you don't have to waste time or money for gas, driving all over creation.

My favorite thing is looking for old vinyl records for my record player. As you know Big Band records are my very favorite. I found approximately 10 or 12, at 50 cents a whack, now that's a bargain. I could hardly wait to get home to play them. I wasn't disappointed. You ole timers out there know the ones called dream dancing. Bopping and bunny-hopping are great, but there comes a time on any dance floor when the lights go low, the music turns pretty and young ladies and men get that cheek-to-cheek look in their eyes. That's the time for dream dancing. According to the back of one of the records, dream dancing is a very special kind of thing. The eyes of the dancers close, but their hearts are very much awake. And, the dancer's thoughts are so nice they could be dreams. As for the dancing, it's a relatively non-athletic kind of dancing -- slow and easy, timed to music designed for two heads together. That usually calls for dreamy songs, with the lyrics sung silently by the dancers. The young lady lays her head on her partners shoulder and closes her eyes. Now that, is dream dancing.

Some of the songs on one of the records were: "I Only Have Eyes for You", "Embraceable You", "Street of Dreams", "Stars Fell on Alabama", and "Moonlight in Vermont". I think you get the picture.

Besides records, I love old costume jewelry, and by golly, I even found a few great pieces.

The following week, the Village of Vesper had their Vesper Days and their all city garage sale. A friend and I went to the Vesper Library to check out their book sale. All paperbacks were 10 cents each and hardbacks a quarter. We stocked up, what a bargain! I also had talked to George Halverson, a Vesper resident, and he said they would be having a garage sale that day too, and would have lots of records. I lucked out again and found 19 big band records. Man, I was playing records non-stop for days. I finally got through them all and began playing them again. Then, my friend Sally said her husband had gone through his old records and had a stack for me. Wow! Let me tell you folks, it was just like Christmas around here. I love garage sales!
