Senior Swingers Band to play downtown

Wednesday, July 9, 2008

We were very pleased with the nice evening for dancing at the Buck Run Community Center, there was a good turnout again. The band did a good job and having lots of music keeps people on the floor.

We had a good group doing the "Put your little foot" dance tonight. It is an old dance and a good one to learn. We had about the same number for dancing the line dance.

Alva McNeely sings a good tune and keeps everyone dancing. Alva sings and then picks up his violin and does a good job playing waltz or whatever we ask for. We all take turns playing or singing. Wes Coleman sings and plays his mandolin and does a good job. Marion Shrimplin plays the bass and takes his turn singing too. Clarence Nation does a good job on his horn and he has a large book of songs that are good dance pieces. He has the music written and will tell me the name and key of what he plays and the rest just follows.

Bill Eshelbrenner brought a big pan of BBQ meat strips, he cooks well and we all enjoyed it. It was put in the oven and kept hot. The pies and cakes were a bit different tonight, Carol Davenport did not bring her usual coconut creme pie but there were three or four good looking pies and cakes. There are no sliced tomatoes yet, but there will be some soon out of the home gardens.

A get well card was signed for Neva Hite, who is back in the hospital here in Fort Scott. She is low on blood now, but her husband, Alva, was at the dance and said she was doing better.

Harold and Lucille Shumaker left a little while before break time because he was not feeling well. Lucille plays a few tunes on her harmonica after break time.

Aletha Dalton from El Dorado has been in the hospital for some time and is home now, but is not doing much better. They used to enjoy coming to our dances very much.

There will be a dance at the Community Center in Pittsburg, Wednesday night, starting at 7 p.m. There will also be a dance Friday night, the Senior Swingers Band will play down town at the Gazebo on First and Main Street, starting at 7:30 p.m.

The Marmaton Valley Old Time Fiddlers, Pickers and Singers monthly meeting will be held at the Senior Center on North Main Street, Sunday afternoon, starting at one. Everyone is welcome to come and enjoy the singing and music or to take part if they would like.
