Gas dealers in Fort Scott and its fringe area are assured a fair distribution of sheriff's office gas purchases under a new system put into effect June 1. Also designed to simplify county bookkeeping, the system operates this way: The names of the 26 gas dealers are written on individual slips of paper and placed in a cigar box. Twice a month, on the first and 15th, one slip is drawn from the container. Sheriff's office gas purchases are then made at the service station during the following two-week period. When all the names have been drawn from the box, new slips are made and the cycle begins anew. The Tribune reporter yesterday drew the name of the Runyon Texaco Service Station, 1503 East Wall, which will supply gas for sheriff's patrol cars during the present period which ends July 15.

Dick Hedges, for four yeas the principal of Fort Scott High School, was named Fort Scott Community College's new president. He will begin his new job July 5 replacing Wayne McElroy. Hedges is a native of Blue Mound and a graduate of the former Blue Mound High School. Hedges emerged at the top of what selection committee chairman Tim Bloomfield called an "avalanche" of 167 applications for the post. "My first priority is to find out what my priorities are," Hedges said. He said he applied for the job because he wanted it, and not because he had been asked to. Hedges said, "If I had not been here, I would have been quite happy to work at the high school. To me it was a win-win situation."
