100 YEARS AGO

(1908)

What do you know about diamonds? If you buy from Prager you get the benefit of a selecting from a large stock and 38 years of experience.

Miss Virgil Gordon, a member of the high school senior class, is conducting the history classes at the high school in the absence of H.C. Hubbart, who has gone to Chicago to do post graduate work at the university. Miss Gordon is a sister of B.E. Gordon, formerly a high school instructor here.

The police department seems to have stamped out bootlegging altogether. Since the recent raids there has not been an indication of further violations in this mater. The inclined to make illegal sales are probably frightened by the recent arrests, and then, too , the fact that whiskey cases are being tried in district court seems to serve as a dampener on this business.

Few people realize what it costs to ship a car of fruit from either coast to the central part of the country. The other day a car of lemons came here from Florida. The freight was almost $380.

75 YEARS AGO

(1933)

Garland News in Brief: Several farmers in the area have lost horses and cows this spring from various causes. Among them are E.W. Boatright and Ola Hawkins. Earl Foster and James McCollough lost horses. This is unfortunate at this time as horses are high in price and badly needed just now.

West Bethel: The ball team composed of River Rats defeated Redfield at Redfield Sunday afternoon by a score of 10 to 2.

The representative of the Hepler Rural High School gave their half-hour program over KGGF at Coffeyville May 4. Although it was the first experience for most of the students they did very nicely. The Coffeyville station is located in the back part of the Journal building on Main Street, across the street from the post office. In the radio station are several broadcasting rooms.

HEPLER -- Hepler Rural High School will grant diplomas to 13 seniors at commencement exercises May 23. These seniors are Tom Armstrong, Charles Bird, Loran Emrick, Donald Harris, Beverly Johnson, Ben Karleskint, Chester Kruse, Mildred Peterson, Sue Emrick, Loren Reith, Barbara Sapp, Eddie Sweet and Helen Winterbower.

ARCADIA -- Commencement exercises for the 20 graduating seniors of Arcadia High School will be MAY 22. The graduates are Louise Cukjati, Bob Ross, Wynona Blacketer, Herschel Vaughn, Marilou Bork, Gary Cambers, Bob Hartzfield, Carol Ann Morris, Mary Lyn Brown, Fred Dixon, Susie Stelle, Joyce McKinstry, Bill Watt, Laura Coonrod, Earl Swafford, Yvonne Smith, Merle Reynolds, Colleen Fanning and Daniel Sheffield.

HUME -- Hume High School will hold commencement exercises May 22. The graduates are Beverly Bezemer, Rita Brooks, Ray Caskey, Karen Elledge, Carroll Finley, James Finley, Sharon Fitzgerald, Kenneth Foote, Gary Franklin, David Hess, Joanna Hess, Melvin Humphrey, Beatrice McClaughry, Ray Miner, Patsy Perkins, Judith Pieratt, Earl Simpson and Newata Wimmer

Ed Brooks and Rufus Baugh plan to attend the Spanish-American War Veterans state convention at Ottawa.

25 YEARS AGO

(1983)

Rhonda Dunn, a Fort Scott High School senior, and Darla Drain, a teacher at Jayhawk-Linn High School, Mound City, have been selected by the Bourbon County Business and Professional Women's Club as the 1983 Outstanding Youth and Outstanding Young Careerist, respectively. Gifts and certificates were presented to the honorees during an awards program at the Old Fort Cafeteria.
