Lawrence Marion Ward, age 88, a resident of Fort Scott, died Friday morning, March 21, 2008, at the Medicalodge. He was born Jan. 20, 1920, in Leroy, Kan., the son of Frederick Eugene Ward and Ada Inez Bird Ward. He married Arlene Bagby on Nov. 1, 1942, in Topeka, Kan. Mr. Ward was self-employed in his painting and contracting business. He also was active in the Jehovah's Witness ministry. In his earlier years he played harmonica and guitar with the "Ted West and Range Riders" band on WREN radio in Lawrence, Kan. Mr. and Mrs. Ward moved from Texas to Fort Scott in 1982. He was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses.

Survivors include his wife Arlene, of the home; two sisters, Lucille Lowe, Fort Scott and Mary Florence Frawley, Jensen Beach, Florida; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by three brothers, LeRoy Ward, Louis Ward, and Raymond Ward, and one sister, Opal Irene Ward.

Elder Eugene Smerchek will conduct funeral services at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Cheney Witt Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Kingdom Hall and may be sent to Cheney Witt Chapel, P.O. Box 347, Fort Scott, KS 66701.
