Fort Scott Community College's women, down to just seven players, were unable to keep a consistent effort going Wednesday night in a 74-49 loss to Johnson County, ranked fourth in the nation in NJCAA Division II.

The Greyhounds, 5-10 in the Jayhawk Conference's Eastern Division and 12-12 overall, were able to keep pace with the Cavaliers early and also staged a brief second-half rally that brought them back within six points.

But in each case, Fort Scott suddenly stopped hitting shots and Johnson County (10-6, 20-8) went on long scoring runs.

Brittney English's stickback tied the score at 18-18 with 10 minutes left in the first half. But the 'Hounds went over eight minutes before scoring a field goal as the Cavs scored 16 unanswered points.

Fort Scott, trailing 37-22 at the half, managed to get back within 41-35 with 15:10 left in the game on a 9-0 run keyed by freshmen Leondra Doomes-Stephens and Ashley Jappa. But, again, the offensive production suddenly stopped as the Greyhounds scored only a pair of free throws during the Cavs' 18-2 run over the next six minutes.

The Cavaliers had firm control of the contest after that as the Greyhounds never scored on consecutive possessions again.

Doomes-Stephens led Fort Scott with 25 points while Jappa scored all of her eight-points in the second half. The pair combined for 23 of Fort Scott's 27 second-half points.

Megahan Waggoner led Johnson County with 17 points. Erica Rothwieler added 11 and Katie Buenger chipped in with 10. Each one of the 12 players who suited up for the Cavs scored.

The Greyhounds will go to Parsons to take on Labette in a Jayhawk Conference contest at 5 p.m. Saturday evening.
