FEMA issues map of Marmaton, Osage floodplain extensions

Tuesday, January 22, 2008

The Homeland Security Federal Emergency Management Agency has conducted a preliminary study of the Bourbon County floodplain that is extending flooding in areas that commonly flood along the Marmaton and Osage rivers. FEMA has provided mapping of Bourbon County that depicts the extension of the flood elevations along the Marmaton and Osages rivers.

Bourbon County residents can view FEMA's proposed extension of the floodplain to determine if their homes are withing the new flood range by contacting Bourbon County Sanitarian Tom McNeil at the Courthouse, (620) 223-3800, extension 19.

FEMA Flood Plain Management officials said Bourbon County residents who want to appeal FEMA's findings regarding extension of the floodplain, which may impact their property, may call the FEMA Map Assistance Center toll free at (877) 336-2627 (FEMA MAP).

An appeal process is in place that allows residents to argue whether their property actually floods in the FEMA proposed extended floodplain areas.

Residents need to find out if they will be classified in the floodplain before the maps are approved this spring, so they have an opportunity to obtain flood insurance at a much reduced rate.

A copy of the updated FEMA floodplain map is available for viewing on the second floor of the Bourbon County Courthouse, 210 S. National Ave., outside the Public Works Office.
