On Nov. 30 and Dec. 1, the Fort Scott High School debate squad competed at the Pittsburg 14-school invitational.

There were two divisions competing, varsity and novice. In both, the Tigers dominated the action. At the varsity level, three of the final eight teams to break into quarterfinals from the original 40 were from Fort Scott.

Brittney Doherty and Kim Stone went in as the number two seed with a 5-0 record. They were joined by fellow teams of Jacoby Zielinski/ Sterling Braun 4-1, and Kandyce Beerbower/ Daniel Lyon 4-1.

In quarterfinals Zielinski /Braun and Beerbower/ Lyon each advanced to semis. Once there, each team took care of business by winning, to close out finals with an all Fort Scott affair.

At the novice level, the squad also found success as Chris Herman and partner Tony Jackson were the only undefeated 5-0 team, capturing first. They were closely tailed by teammates Leah Casselman and Megan Midkiff, whose 4-1 finished placed them in second. Also medaling were Kai Simmons and Kutis West in 5th place. Overall the squads top-four teams compiled an impressive 18-2 record to capture sweeps over distant McPherson, who ended with 15 wins.

This makes the 7th sweeps title this year to go along with six other top-three finishes.

The squad is again in action on the Dec. 14 and 15 as they head to Winfield to compete for a chance to advance to the National Forensics League national tournament in Los Vegas, Nev., next summer.
