FSCC sees 15 named to All-KJCCC grid team

ARKANSAS CITY, Kan. -- The Kansas Jayhawk Community College conference named 15 members of Fort Scott Community College's football team to its All-Conference Team earlier this week.

Fort Scott, currently 9-2 with a trip to the Valley of the Sun Bowl in Phoenix, Ariz., coming up Dec. 1, finished as the runner-up in both conference play and in the Region VI Playoffs. Butler, of El Dorado, Kan., won both titles and gave the Greyhounds their only two losses on the field this season.

Butler led all schools with 21 honorees. Garden City saw 16 players selected while Coffeyville also had 15. Independence had 10 selections, Dodge City, Hutchinson four and Highland, the only school without a first team player, three.

Greyhound fans might be hard-pressed to believe that only three of the 15 Fort Scott players who were honored were chosen to the first team. Additionally, the only player on the No. 1 offense in the conference that received first-team status was Brunswick, Ga., sophomore quarterback Greg Cross. Cross' honor was well deserved as he is the conference' leading passer and also 10th in the nation with an average of 193 yards per game (2,127 total). However, for his efforts, Cross was named the Jayhawk Conference Offensive Player of the Year.

Fort Scott's first-team defensive picks are Marreo, La., sophomore defensive end Kwame Jordan and Coral Springs, Fla., sophomore safety Lucien Antoine. Jordan is second in the conference in sacks with 17 1/2. Antoine is fifth in the KJCCC with 10.2 tackles per game (112 total, which would be second in the conference if it went by that instead of per-game average).

There was also one Fort Scott offensive player named to the second team, Louisburg, Kan., sophomore guard Jared Koechner. Koechner's unit is not only No. 1 in total offense (370 yards per game) but also first in passing (203 ypg), second in scoring (27 points per game) and fourth in rushing (167 ypg).

Fort Scott's two second-team defensive picks were both sophomore linebackers: Antonio Charles of Sarasota, Fla., and Jaquain Williams of Tampa, Fla. Charles has 77 tackles, 2 1/2 sacks and an interception returned for a touchdown. Williams has made 60 tackles, including 11 for a loss. He also had 5 1/2 sacks and two interceptions.

The remaining Greyhound honors were honorable mention. The list begins with both of Fort Scott's offensive tackles, Shawnee, Kan., sophomore John Darrah and Eclectic, Ala., freshman David Lazenby. Also chosen offensively were Pompano Beach, Fla., sophomore tailback Rodney Lovett, Douglass sophomore fullback Jon Dukes and Walterborro, S.C., freshman receiver Nick Adams.

Lovett is second in conference in rushing with a 120.7 yard-per-game average (1,328 total) with 12 touchdowns. He has also caught 14 passes for 104 yards and one score. Dukes hasn't touched the ball much this season but has helped pave the way for most of Lovett's yards and provided protection for Cross on passing plays.

Adams is the Greyhounds' leading receiver, fifth in the conference with 4.4 receptions per game (48 total, which is second in the conference), and second in the KJCCC with 68.0 yards per game (748 total, which is also second). He has scored seven touchdowns.

Honorable mention choices on defense are Topeka, Kan., sophomore defensive end Mack Cole, Galena, Kan., sophomore linebacker Matt Glades, Marlin, Texas, sophomore defensive back Coryell Judie, and Getna, Va., freshman defensive tackle Horace Hubbard.

Cole is third in the conference in sacks with 17 and has made 71 tackles this season, 19 1/2 of them for a loss. Glades leads the Greyhounds in tackles with 113 and is fourth in the conference based on average (10.3 per game), although no one has made more tackles in total. Glades has also made 14 1/2 tackles for a loss and 7 1/2 sacks. He has also intercepted a pass.

Judie is the conference leader in interceptions with six but is considered to be second in the official totals because it's based on per-game average. Judie has played two more games than the "leader," Demetrious Warmble of Independence, who only played nine games. Judie is also third in passes defended (1.2 per game) as he has broken up seven passes.

Hubbard transferred to Fort Scott from the University of Ohio and is currently fifth in the conference in sacks with 15 (1.3 per game). Hubbard has also made 16 1/2 tackles for a loss. Overall, he has made 83 tackles, which is third on the team.

In other honors, Butler head coach Troy Morell, who has lost just 10 of 91 games in his career there, was named the Coach of the Year. Defensive end Markus White of Butler was the Defensive Player of the Year.
