Eagles’ playoff hopes end with loss to Cubs

UNIONTOWN, Kan. -- Any remaining chance for a spot in the Kansas Class 2-1A playoffs ended for Uniontown here Friday night after a 39-12 loss to Humboldt in District 5 play.

The Cubs, 1-1 in the district at 7-1 overall, scored the game’s first four touchdowns as they kept their chances alive. After a scoreless first quarter, Sam Norris scored both second-period touchdowns on a 46-yard punt return and a one-yard run. One of the two conversion kicks was good, making it 13-0.

Andrew Whitaker scored on a two-yard run in the third period to make it a 19-0 game. Norris scored for the third time on a seven-yard run to start the fourth, with the kick making it 26-0.

Jamie Shelton got the Eagles, 0-2, 2-5, on the board with a 32-yard pass reception from Travis Aikins. Whitaker scored again from three yards out to make it 32-6.

Jesse Johnston returned the ensuing kickoff 73 yards for Uniontown. Thad Wells capped the scoring for Humboldt by scoring on a 28-yard run.

The Eagles gained 234 total yards, 114 coming on the ground. Zach Mason led the rushing game with 84 yards on 14 carries. Shelton caught three passes for 50 yards.

Aikins completed nine of 23 passes for 120 yards but also threw four interceptions.

Humboldt gained 321 of its 406 total yards on the ground.

Uniontown plays at Pittsburg Colgan Thursday night in what will be the Eagles’ season finale. Undefeated Colgan clinched the district title with a 40-0 victory over Pleasanton Friday night
