FCE Council reviews service, plans Fall Follies program

Wednesday, October 17, 2007

The Bourbon County Family and Community Education Council met Sept. 26 to plan future educational programs for FCE members and the public. A note from Mercy Health Center thanked the Council for coordinating and assisting with the cardio risk assessment and the blood pressure screenings at the 2007 Bourbon County Fair.

Starlight FCE was thanked for the donation of cookies to the Fort Scott Area Chamber of Commerce Visitors Center. The council reviewed their involvement in the Bourbon County Fair.

New officers elected were president, Judy Orton; vice president, Lois Williams; secretary and reporter, Joyce Sinn; and treasurer, Doris Ericson.

The council planned for the upcoming FCE Fall Follies to be Nov. 14 at Community Christian Church. Refreshments will be served at 9:30 a.m. and programs will follow at 10 and 11 a.m. Nancy Schuster will present "Grandma What Did You Do During the War?" a program based on a quilt that began as a block of the month project that appeared in the Kansas City Star's Star magazine in 2003. The quilt honors women's contributions to World War II. Schuster will also teach pacer piecing of quilts. Ann Ludlum will present "Lighten Up the Holidays" with information on lowering fat and calories in favorite holiday foods. A carry in luncheon will be held at noon.

An evening session of Fall Follies will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 15. Bourbon County Extension Agent Ann Ludlum will provide highlight presentations of both programs. The public is invited to attend either of these events.

The council reviewed the 2008 education lessons for the FCE units.

The council is excited to announce that National FCE Week will be celebrated from Oct. 14-20.

Sally Brock reported that 380 Read to Me books were donated to the obstetrics department at Mercy. This donation of books for newborns and information on the importance of reading to children, was made possible by a grant from 1st Book and a monetary donation from the Fort Scott Pioneer Kiwanis.
