100 YEARS AGO

(1907)

Travel to California for $25 by Santa Fe from Kansas City and all points in Kansas; also corresponding rates from other points. Daily through October 31. Chair cars and Pullman tourist sleepers. Stops at Williams for Grand Canyon; Ash Fork for Prescott and Phoenix; and at many other points. Harvey meals served.

(1932)

In The Tribune window is to be seen a specimen of a giant cockscomb grown by Mrs. Carrie Smith in her flower garden in Uniontown. Mrs. Smith had some even larger than this one which she wished to keep.

A farm woman asks why farm folks think they have to go to town to retire. "Why not retire and still live in the country?" she asks. She thinks that many older people who have been used to the freedom of the farm life never adjust themselves to the changed conditions in town and are never satisfied.

C.A. Milburn, Fulton, threw a party last week when neighbors came to help put his bean crop in the barn.

Many farm women in the west Liberty neighborhood will have a nice little wad in their purses this fall when they sell their turkeys. More turkeys are raised in that locality than any other place in this section of the county. There are some flocks there with 150 turkeys.

50 YEARS AGO

(1957)

C.F. Griffith, Fort Scott, is remodeling the farm house on the ranch on Route 1, Redfield, and is making it modern. The Griffiths' son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Martin, are tenants on the ranch.

UNIONTOWN--A homecoming queen will be crowned here tomorrow night between halves of the R.H.S. 4 homecoming game between the Eagles and the invading Kincaid football team. Queen candidates are Carol Royston, Lavon Richard, Pauline Perry, Virginia Miller and Melba Calvin.

If you have checked your rural mailbox lately only to discover it missing, you may be the owner of the one waiting to be claimed at city police headquarters. Jim Bybee turned a postal container over to police after recently discovering it in his yard. The numerals 6822 appear on the aluminum box.

Lori Douglas was elected president of Goodluck 4-H Club. Other new officers are Darren Warren, Mila Hibdon, Fred Wunderly and Rebecca Warren. Ken Douglas and Judy Davis are song leaders; Mitch Crystal, parliamentarian; Jason Lewis and Kathy Swink, recreation leaders; and Darren Hibdon and Jeff Swink, council members. Laura Wunderly, Flint Roufs and Jodi Quick were welcomed as new members.
