100 YEARS AGO

(1907)

Justice Walter L. Simons, today notified Sheriff Hesser that the October term of district court would not convene until October 21, two weeks from the time originally agreed upon as court day. The postponement is necessary, as the repairs at the court room have not been completed. The court was kept busy today calling up jurors and litigants, notifying them of the delay.

To the Editor: Your musical critic merits the thanks of a long suffering people for his report of the organ concert in Monday's Tribune. The church people in good faith arranged with the builders of the organ for a recital which they hoped would be highly entertaining to the public, but the details were left with a Kansas City organist who cares for nothing but to please a certain class who do not represent more than one-tenth to go home hungry on account of the dearth of the class of music that stirs the soul and appeals to the heart.-- "A Sufferer"

Leo's Market (Leo Hetzler) announces the opening of his Fort Scott Wholesale and Retail Meat Co., 516 East Wall Street. He wishes to thank his many customers for his rapid increase in business which has necessitated this large location. To show his appreciation he offers you these money saving values: sliced bacon, l lb. package, 10 cents; fancy porkchops, 2 lbs., 25 cents; pork shoulder roast, 9 cents a lb.; home made chili, lb., 13 cents; Morrell's Pride hams, 15 cents a lb.; Miller's Jersey Queen Butter, lb., 22 cents.

A poultry show in which over 2,000 pure blood White Rock chickens will be entered in a contest for $100 cash awards will be combined with a parade of 1,000 boys and girls and a banquet for prize winners to draw the attention of poultry raisers and others in this area to Fort Scott on Oct. 15. The show is sponsored by the Calhoun Drygoods Company with the aim of increasing interest in this area in the poultry industry.

50 YEARS AGO

(1957)

Dale G. Barney, son of Winston Barney of Mapleton, who attended the University of Kansas this past summer, has graduated from a six-week Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps course at Quantieo, Va. Upon graduation from Kansas University he will be eligible for a commission as a second lieutenant in the Marine Corps.

Benton More reports $555 in fines was collected by his justice of the peace court in September. After the amount is turned over to the county treasurer, part of it is earmarked for a state school fund.

Mrs. Robert (Margie) Johnson, 1124 South Judson, secretary for the Fort Scott Hairdressers Unit, attended the State Cosmetologist Convention at the Broadview Hotel, Wichita.

(1982)

Hepler Area News (By Vicki O'Bryan)--The Hepler Alumni banquet was held Sept. 4. Presiding were the present officers: Lavon Howell, president; Raymond Johnston, vice president; Buford Shankel, secretary; and Norris Attkisson, treasurer. New officers were elected to include Raymond Johnston, president; Katherine Neil, vice president; Buford Shankel, secretary; and Norris Attkisson, treasurer. Former teachers attending were Avis Johnson, Joe Skubitz, Mary Lee Mein, Kenny Huber and Ruth Bloomcamp. Waren Armstrong was the only school board member attending. It was announced that Mrs. Jack (Jenny) Attkisson and Chet Ausemus have not missed attending a reunion.

GARLAND (By Verma Hoggatt)--Mr. and Mrs. Ron Palmer and Charles Palmer attended the football game at Chanute Tuesday in which Brian participated with the eighth graders.

Mr. and Mrs. Art Dugan and Mr. and Mrs. Kenny Schwartz attended the state fair at Hutchinson.
