Legionnaires, friends bid farewell to Wiley Teague

On Sept. 10, Autumn Leaves Senior Citizens met in their Cottage with nine present for blood pressure readings given by Lisa Roberts from Girard Medical Center.

The building looked very nice outside since Jack Payne had mowed and cleaned the sidewalk.  Inside was very clean by the Shriners who had a dinner there following their participation in the Arcadia Parade.  Decorations were fall flowers.  The organization gave a donation to the club. 

Five cheer cards had been sent since the last meeting.  One was signed for the Ed Easter family.  The blessing was given by Jack Payne.

After the business meeting  the following readings were given:  "New Baby" by Mary Lee Payne, "Fishing Hole" by Jerry Coonrod, "What an Egg" by Carole Garrison, "To Be Thankful" by President Lilly Coonrod, and "The Painter" by Mary V. Shead.

 Others present were Bob Cavin, Helen Sisney and DAvid Peterson who participated the in drawing of slips of paper from a decorated jar and comments by each one. The meeting had opened with Lord's Prayer and Flag Salute and closed with the Mizpah benediction.  All folks are invited to attend the next carry-in dinner and meeting to be held October 8.  Building opens at 11 a.m.

Tom and Phyllis Watt came from Lee's Summit to spend the day with his Mother Mae Watt and help with Home work and cook a fine meal.  The following day, Tom went with 28 men who took 14 boats to a fishing tournament at a Missouri lake.  The boat Tom was in won first place.  He caught a 3 1/2-pound bass.

Since his retirement as Pastor of Victory Life Center in Pittsburg, Don Talent, on occasion has filled the pulpit in Open Door Mission in Arcadia this summer.  He and his wife Esther were the founders of Open Door Mission when it was a former Arcadia Methodist Church building,  An electric storm struck the belfry and it burned to the ground June l979

Many worked cleaning the bricks and a new church building was built on the site known as Open Door Mission where Don Talent continued pastoring for several years.  Roy Widmar is the present pastor. 

Saturday morning, Sept. 22, after breakfast at Arcadia Bearcat, Forrest and Ernestine Berkey went to the parade and Tractor pull in McCune.  They were greeted by Dalton James Windsor of KKOW.  With friends that evening, they attended the movie "Mr. Woodcock" in the Pittsburg Mall after dinner at the Mall Deli.

On Monday evening, Ernestine and daughter Angela Redd went to Columbus to watch Kristen Redd play in the volleyball game.  Her team, the Frontenac Raiders, won three games that evening. 

On Monday afternoon, Annette Brandell of  Farlington visited friends in Arcadia.

Included on the City of Arcadia calendar for October are the following:  Oct. 8, Columbus Day the City Hall and Post Office will be closed.  Oct 10, the City Council will meet.  Oct. l3 there will be a Community Sing in the Center.  Oct. l5 Flu shots will be at the Community Center from 9:30-10:30 a.m.. Kids Night Wiener Roast will be Oct 27. The firefighters are having a fund raiser.  Tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5 to win a Big Screen TV.  God's Coffeehouse patrons are selling tickets for an outdoor grill for a future drawing $1 each.

Wiley Teague, one of the oldest citizens in Arcadia was buried on Friday morning, Sept. 21 in Sheffield Cemetery near Arcadia.  Pastor David Peterson led the service.

Taped music was played as  requested by Wiley included "When I Take My Vacation in Heaven," "Heading For The Last Roundup" and "Happy Trails To You."

Several friends  spoke on his behalf and the Bedene Chapel held his many friends who viewed.

American Legion Buddies attended together as honorary Pallbearers.  Two Fort Riley soldiers folded the casket flag and presented it to brother-in-law Bill  Leonard. "" wasplayed.  Casket bearers were Jerry Coonrod, Sandy Horton, Jeremy Nutter, Jack Payne, Donald Bright and Dee Decuyper.  Wiley will be sadly missed.
