Elder fifth despite injury; Tigers third

Tuesday, September 25, 2007

Senior Kiersten Elder played in her home tournament at Fort Scott Country Club Monday despite an injured wrist and won her fifth medal of the season at the Uniontown Invitational.

Meanwhile, Fort Scott High School sent four individuals here and placed third in the team standings as senior Adrianne Tourtillott shot 60 on the front nine and 51 on the back to finish with a score of 111, good for 12th place.

There were 15 medals handed out Monday instead of the usual 10.

Elder shot 52-52--104 to finish in fifth place. She missed the Eagles' last tournament due to a wrist injury which she suffered while playing in Fort Scott's invitational here a week ago.

"Her grandfather, he was a spectator here today, said 'She'll just have to cowboy up'," Uniontown head coach Alan Shinn said. "She was very inconsistent today because of the sore wrist. At times, she had some terriffic shots and some of her others were not so good."

Tourtillott missed a couple of tournaments two weeks ago, so Fort Scott head coach Karen Curran entered her, Dana Ballou, Morgan Morasch and Katie Bristley, all of whom could play without going over the season limit of tournaments they can play in the regular season.

"Adrianne is struggling a bit right now," Curran said. "But hopefully, she'll shake it off this afternoon and get on track to finish the season strong."

Fort Scott's team score was 529, one ahead of Yates Center. Caney Valley won the nine-team tourney with a score of 413 followed by Anderson County at 431.

Ballou shot 60-60--120 for the Tigers while Bristley shot 67-68--135 and Morasch finished at 79-83--162.

"Dana Ballou had a great day on the golf course," Curran said. "Her 60s are record low rounds for her first season. Katie had another good day. She's been pretty consistent lately but is poised to drop a few more strokes and set a new scoring low. And Morgan has moments of brilliance but is still having a hard time putting her entire game together at once. They are all working really hard to become good golfers but it will take time I'm proud of how far they've come in such a short time."

Taylor Hanson shot 72-61--133 for Uniontown. Emily Pulliam finished at 86-93--179 and Raven Hixon shot 98-92--190. With Elder's score, the Eagles shot 606 as a team, which was last among the eight teams eligible for the team title.

Fort Scott will play today at Pittsburg. Curran will take Tourtillott along with Cassie Ogran, Kacie Brown, Shelby Blackburn and Jessica Henry. Play was scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. for the 18-hole tournament. The Tigers were also scheduled to go to Columbus for a 3 p.m. start on Thursday.

Uniontown will be off until next Monday when the regular season finishes with an 18-hole affair at Anderson County. Fort Scott will also be there.

NOTES -- Shinn said that Uniontown has been chosen by the Kansas State High School Activities Association to host a Class 4-1A Regional Tournament at Fort Scott Country Club. The tournament will be played October 8. The teams will be assigned after the KSHSAA assigns 2007-08 classifications, which should happen next Monday or Tuesday....
