Regional brackets set for baseball, softball

Thursday, May 10, 2007

Thanks to the waiver of the 10-game minimum, Fort Scott High's baseball team drew the No. 2 seed in the Anderson County Class 4A Regional Tournament, which will get underway Monday at Dutch Brummell Field in Garnett.

Meanwhile, a coin toss between Fort Scott and Iola gave the Tigers the No. 3 seed in the Louisburg Class 4A Regional Softball Tournament, which will be played here beginning Monday.

The baseball team, 4-4, would have been seeded as if they were 5-15 had the rule not been waived by the Kansas State High School Activities Association this year because of the plague of rainouts across the state. Fort Scott would have been the only team affected by this rule as each of the other seven teams had played at least 12 games when seeding was determined Wednesday. Top-seeded Louisburg, 16-4, was the only team to have already played the full allotment of 20 regular-season games and Anderson County, 0-18, and Prairie View, 8-10, were the only others to play more than 14.

The Tigers will play the first of four opening-round games Monday at Garnett. They will take on Osawatomie, 3-11, the No. 7 seed. They are in the same half of the bracket as No. 6 Iola, 3-9, and No. 3 Prairie View, which will face off at 4:30.

The top side of the bracket has No. 5 Paola, 5-9, facing No. 4 Chanute, 6-8, at 2:15 and No. 8 Anderson County playing top-seed Louisburg at 6:45.

Monday's winner will come back Tuesday for the semifinals and finals. The winners in the top half of the bracket face off at 2. Fort Scott, if it wins, will play the winner of the Iola-Prairie View match at 4:30. The championship game is scheduled for 7 p.m.

The winner of this Regional qualifies for the Class 4A State Tournament at Salina May 25 and 26.

Fort Scott and Iola's softball teams, tied for the second-best records at 9-3, had to go to the coin flip because the league games scheduled between them Monday were rained out. Iola won the toss and is the No. 2 seed.

Two fields will be used at Louisburg's Lewis & Young Park Monday. The tournament, which has nine teams, will begin with a "play-in" game between No. 9 Prairie View, 3-14, and No. 8 Chanute, 3-12, at 2 p.m. on Field C.

The Tigers will play at 4 p.m. on Field B against the combined team of Pomona and Williamsburg High Schools, sometimes known as West Franklin, which is the No. 6 seed with a record of 7-9. Iola and No. 7 Osawatomie, 4-13, will play in the following game at 4:45.

In the top half of the bracket, No. 5 Anderson County, 8-7, will take on No. 4 Louisburg on Field C at 4. The "play-in" winner will draw the top seed, Paola, 10-2, at 6 on Field C.

The winners will have Tuesday off, then return here Wednesday for the final two rounds. All games will be played on Field C.

The winners in the top half of the bracket will face off at 3 with the Tigers, should they win, playing the Iola-Osawatomie winner at 4:45. The championship game will be played at 6:30.

The winner of the Regional qualifies for the Class 4A State Tournament at Salina May 25 and 26. Both Fort Scott and Louisburg have qualified for the last two State tourneys, facing each other in the first round in 2005.
