Hutch, Neosho to try to play here
Two series remain to be completed in the first round of the Region VI Baseball Tournament. It's just a matter of finding a place that's dry enough to play the games.
Bracket play starts Friday at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium in Wichita, leaving a limited amount of time for Hutchinson and Neosho County to play the third game of their first-round series and for Dodge City and Kansas City to complete the third game of their's.
Hutch and Neosho will try to play their game three at Lions Field this afternoon at 2:30. The first game of the series was delayed one day to Sunday. Neosho County won the first game 5-1 but Hutch took the second 11-5 to tie the series.
The winner of the Dodge City-KCK series plays Fort Scott Friday at 3. They split the first two games Saturday at Kansas City. KCK won the first game 13-11 but Dodge -- the eighth-place team in the Jayhawk Conference-Western Division -- took game two 9-5 and also held a 6-2 lead when game three was suspended in the fifth inning on Sunday.
As of press time, it wasn't certain when or where the Dodge-KCK series would be finished.
Baseball isn't the only sport with problems. Both the Division I and Division II softball tournaments for Region VI have been suspended since Sunday morning. The Division I tourney in El Dorado is tentatively set to resume Wednesday with the final two or three games in the double-elimination format.
The Division II Tournament was being played in Wichita but the KJCCC web site says it's suspended "until further notice." The message suggests that when the tournament resumes, it won't necessarily be in Wichita.
There are four games remaining in the Division II tourney. Fort Scott's softball team was in it, losing to Hutchinson 7-3 in Friday's opening round, beating Brown Mackie 2-1 Saturday morning to fight off elimination and losing a hard-fought battle with Coffeyville, 6-4 in 10 innings.
