FORT SCOTT-- Mercy Health System of Kansas will honor its 214 nurses during National Nurses Week, May 6, the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing.

"Mercy nurses are devoted care givers as well as highly skilled professionals," said John Woodrich, president and CEO of MHSK. "During National Nurses Week, we want to honor the men and women who chose this challenging and rewarding career." The American Nurses Association selected the theme "Nursing: A Profession and a Passion" for the week.

According to a release from ANA, each year National Nurses Week focuses on highlighting the diverse ways in which registered nurses are working to improve health care. From bedside nursing in hospitals and long-term care facilities to research institutions, state legislatures, and Congress, the depth and breadth of the nursing profession is meeting the expanding health care needs of our society.

During National Nurses Week, Mercy again reaffirms its commitment to the quality of health care provided by all of its nurses and professional staff. "We are very fortunate to have many long term nursing staff as well as a healthy supply of new nurses entering our system. It is our goal to create a work environment that will encourage current nurses to continue in their careers at Mercy," added Woodrich.

To commemorate the service provided by Mercy's nurses, day in and day out, each nurse will receive a special gift of appreciation.
