Sara Viola Eshelbrenner, age 83, of Fort Scott, passed away early Thursday morning, April 19, 2007, in Aberdeen Village Nursing Home, Olathe. Sara was born February 17, 1924, in Nevada, Missouri the daughter of Oscar B. and Pearle Viola (Hooper) Handly. She married Jack Leitz Eshelbrenner March 16, 1945, in Wichita. Sara graduated from Fort Scott High School with the class of 1942 and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Fort Scott. She was also a member of the Historical Preservation Association, the Old Fort Genealogical Society, and the Kansas Council Genealogical Society. Sara holds a State Certification Director for the Forgotten Settlers Program. She is survived by her husband Jack, a son, Robert J. Eshelbrenner of Caledonia, Michigan, three daughters; Sally Steckler of Kansas City, Missouri, Lyn Hixon of Brentwood, Tennessee, and Jara Martin of Fort Scott, ten grandchildren; Kristin Tate, Monica Szewczyk, Erin Green, Kate Sowder, Andrew Hixon, Sara Hixon, Breann Martin, Sherise Martin, Sophia Martin, Emily Martin, and seven great-grandchildren; Brooke & Jordin Tate, Alexis & Lyza Szewczyk, Eleanor & Jack Green, and Nate Sowder. She was preceded in death by her parents. The Rev. Steve MacArthur will conduct funeral services 10 a.m. Monday, April 23, 2007, at the First Presbyterian Church with burial following at the Fort Scott National Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday evening April 22, 2007, from 5-7 p.m. at the Konantz-Cheney Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church Scholarship Fund and left in the care of the Konantz-Cheney Funeral Home, 15 W. Wall Street, Fort Scott, Kansas, 66701.
