'Hounds finish in third place

Monday, March 5, 2007

Fort Scott Community College women's head coach Kristy Guffey moved into a tie for third place on the all-time victory list when the Greyhounds defeated Labette, 83-64, in the final Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division game of the season at Arnold Arena Saturday afternoon.

The win was Guffey's 46th at FSCC, tying her with Krull (first name not listed in the Tribune's records), who coached from 1980-81 to 1982-83.

The win also put a damper on the homecoming of Labette rookie head coach Katrina Colwell, who is a graduate of Fort Scott High School and also played at FSCC.

With the win, Fort Scott finished in third place in the division at 13-5 and carry an overall mark of 21-9 into a first-round Region VI Tournament playoff game against Dodge City that will be held at Arnold Arena Wednesday night at 7 p.m.

Dodge City finished seventh in the Jayhawk West at 5-11 and is 11-19 overall. They are the No. 6 seed from the West as Barton County was ineligible for the Region VI Tournament due to probation.

Labette tied for sixth place with Independence at 9-9 in the division and is 16-13 overall. They are the No. 4 seed from the East and will host Colby, 10-20, Wednesday night.

Fort Scott's 21 victories are tied for third best in the program's history. If the Greyhounds win Wednesday, they'll advance to a quarterfinal game at Wichita State University Saturday at 5 against the winner of the Kansas City-at-Cloud County contest.

Kenya Doss led Fort Scott with 20 points in Saturday's win over Labette. Jazmin Taylor added 16 points while Jasmine Hammond scored 14, Tiffany Coppage 13 and Keisha Walker 10.

Brittney English grabbed 12 rebounds for the 'Hounds while Hammond came down with 10.

Ciera Washington and Brittany Brown each scored 13 points for Labette while Juliana Leite and Monah Pegorari each scored 11.

The 'Hounds led 38-28 at halftime but Labette scored 12 of the first 14 of the second half to tie it with 16:32 left.

Labette kept it close, getting back within 51-50 when Ciera Washington hit a three-point shot with 10:25 remaining.

Doss scored the first three and last three points of a 10-0 run with her three-point goal making it 61-50 with 8:38 to go.

Fort Scott pulled away from that point, going on another 8-2 run moments later to make it a 69-53 lead with 6:15 remaining.

The Greyhounds finished the game 27 of 67 from the field while Labette came in at 23 of 58. That comes out to 40 percent for both teams.

Fort Scott held a 56-37 rebounding advantage. Labette turned the ball over 23 times to the Greyhounds' 18 times.

NOTES -- Ahead of Guffey and Krull on Fort Scott's coaching victories list are Kevin Swope and Nathan Daume.

Swope was 64-86 from 1986-87 to 1990-91. He coached five seasons and 150 games, the most for any FSCC coach.

Daume, who is now the coach at Hutchinson, finished 63-63 in four seasons from 1998-99 to 200-02. He, Krull (46-44) and Guffey (46-46) are the only FSCC coaches with career records of .500 or better....
