DIXIE LEE McDANIEL
Dixie Lee McDaniel, age 84, resident of Fort Scott, Kan., died Tuesday, Jan. 15, at Mercy Hospital.
She was born June 10, 1928, in Wentworth, Mo., the daughter of Lawrence Nickell and Audna Fertig Nickell. She graduated from Fort Scott High School with the class of 1946. She married Joe Richards in 1946. They later divorced. She married Dale McDaniel in 1954. They later divorced. She worked for Bourbon County as director of the Older American Action Program for 32 years.
Dixie was a member of The Living Bank (organ donor) Houston, Texas, Royal Neighbors of America, American Legion Auxiliary, Eagles Auxiliary No. 411 Parsons, Kan., State Fiddlers, Pickers and Singers, Marmaton Valley Chapter, Nashville Songwriters Association, Bellville, Kan., High Bank Hall of Fame, Kansas City Open Wheel Racing, World War II Memorial, Washington, D.C., and the National Taxi Cab Organization.
She was Woman of the Year 2003-04, Kansas American Legion Auxiliary, served as Alumni Chairman of Fort Scott High School Class of 1946, was founder of the Older American Action Program (1971), Specialist in Field of Aging, First Vice Chairman Southeast Kansas Area Agency on Aging, Assisted in Organization of Red Cross Congregate Meal Program, and was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels.
Dixie owned and operated Vets All American Cab Company for eight years. She attended the All Saints Anglican Church in Chicopee, Kan.
Survivors include one daughter, Sharon Buscher and husband Charles, Warren, Texas; one son, Larry McDaniel and wife Donna, Mooresville, N.C.; four grandchildren, Starlla Kingfisher Miller, Fort Scott, Montie Vaughn, Lizella, Ga., Cory Joe Larsen, Denver, Colo., and Marci McDaniels Kohn and husband Chad, Mooresville, N.C.; eight great grandchildren, JaDell, KaLea, and RaLee Kingfisher, Nicole, Brandy and Taylor Vaughn, Alex Larsen and Hunter Kohn; as well as three great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Harry Nickell, as well as her parents.
Right Rev. James McNeley and Rev. Mr. Martin Dickenson will conduct funeral services at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 18, at the Cheney Witt Chapel. Burial will follow in the Memory Gardens Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. Thursday evening at the Chapel. The family invites those attending the service to join them for a time of lunch and fellowship at the Carriage House following the cemetery committal.
