Family and friends gathered for Father's Day celebrations

On Memorial Day, Forrest and Ernestine Berkey with daughter Angela Redd from Pittsburg, enjoyed shopping in Joplin and had dinner at Steak 'n Shake. That evening they had dinner at Angela's home that included daughters Bethany and Kristen Redd and Kristen's friend Nathan Schriener.

The Kalm families of Fort Scott and rural Garland met on Father's Day Sunday in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Kalm to honor Hurl Kalm and the other father's present for the special dinner.

Capt. Craig Hermiller of the U.S. Army and wife Danielle Hermiller from Fort Riley, Kan., were special guests over the weekend and attended the Father's Day dinner held in the home of Larry and Vickie Shead, rural Garland.

Mark, Haley, Katy and Benjamin Shead had just returned from vacation in Branson, Mo., in time to grill the meat for the dinner. Most of the other dishes served were taken from the garden and orchard and prepared by the ladies in honor of their men. Other guests were Rose Campbell, Charles Corporon, Pittsburg, and Mary V. Shead, Arcadia.

Recent guests in the home of Betty and Lou Dehn were their granddaughters, Chelsi Marie Riley a seventh-grader and her cousin Jillian Crooks, third-grader, both from Lexington, Mo.

On Thursday evening, the young ladies assisted Betty in preparing and serving dinner to two guests, Carole Garrison and Mary V. Shead.

Later that evening, the young girls went with Betty to the airport in Pittsburg to pick up their uncle, Lou Dehn.

As of this date, no plans have been announced by city officials of Arcadia concerning July 4.

Ralph and Cindy Shead of Carl Junction, Mo., went to Bartlesville, Okla., on Saturday to spend the weekend with her father, R. H. Gerrin. Her brother, Mr. and Mrs. David Geurin did the grilling for the Father's Day dinner

The JOY May dinner was special in that Dave Bridgewater was the cook for all. He roasted the weiners and brought the sandwiches to the dinner table.

Jamison Walrod was a special guest of the pastor and his wife, Charles and Wila Cable.

President Patty Peterson held the business meeting. Corespondence was read from our missions LATM, and Michael and Chrisi Shead in Guatemala. A card was signed and mailed to Sam Trusdale in the U.S. Army.

Plans were made for the summer Bible school. Vera Parrish was all smiles as she read her "Time for Laughter." Others present were Leora Younge, John Parrish, Carol Bridgewater, Wayne and Christie Parrish, Stuart and Elizabeth Semple, Brian Guest, Machelle and son Castro, Mary V. Shead and her guest Ernestine Ward.

The city has announced that we will keep our post office with changes to go into effect in the summer of 2014. Arcadia, under the proposal, would receive four hours of window service per day instead of eight. Patrons are to rent a post office box number or put up rural boxes along the roads.

The George and Dorothy Quier family in Duqusne, Mo., near Joplin, entertained dinner guests the first part of June. They were their formerr student and wife, Ralph and Cindy Shead of Carl Junction. In showing his sailboat, George said he has it ready for the water and issued a future invitation to go sailing some day.

Both the Quiers were teahers in Arcadia schools and George was later the superintendent.

Port Hughes, of McPherson, Kan., attended her granddaughter's graduation in May. Ginny Gould's Mother, Kirby Gould of Kansas City drove them to Texas for the ceremony.

On June 4, Ginny will start her new job with an advertising agency in Dallas.
