(1912)

A prominent Fort Scott man who is quite a jokester, and who has a fine war record, and whose anecdotes of bravery have stirred the hearts of hundreds of his listeners, was asked what would he have done had he been a passenger on the ill-fated Titanic. His answer was, that if he had paid his fare, and was not a deadhead or had been riding on a pass, that he would have insisted on a seat in one of the lifeboats. Which indicates that the present progressive law knocking out "annuls" would have made it necessary for him to have taken a seat in one of the lifeboats, and as he is a large man across the stern -- as a salt-water man would remark -- he would have used enough room to seat at least two persons.

Members of the Fort Scott Retail Association have combined in offering to the people of this territory the greatest shopping opportunity they have ever had presented to them.

Besides offering only in the largest quantities, Fort Scott merchants, as an additional inducement, will refund the fare of all out-of-town purchasers. This means money in the pockets of every man, woman and child who comes to Fort Scott and takes advantages of this sale. This edition of the Tribune-Monitor contains 16 pages and more than 5,000 copies are being circulated all over Bourbon County and parts of adjoining counties. Fort Scott merchants are offering every line of goods and splendid selections equaled only in the larger cities. Fort Scott merchants have never before joined in a movement of this magnitude.

The board of education, at a meeting called largely for the purpose of discussing school organization problems for the coming year, got off that subject long enough to grant the request of high school students that they be allowed to dance at the junior-senior reception May 27. It has not been definitely decided where the reception will be held.

The suggestion that a limit be placed on the number of contests, athletic, forensic and otherwise -- that local students may enter -- was discussed by the board. Also, the board talked of limiting the distance that students may travel to participate in such contests. A resolution was adopted by the board requiring the persons in charge of such activities to secure the consent of the board before arranging to take part in any such contest outside the state.

A duel came to an end last night in Fort Scott as Roscoe Campbell's name was stricken from the Lions Club ballot. Campbell and Harold Croan had been engaged in a fishing duel. The man who caught the biggest fish was to have his name taken off the ballot. Campbell snagged a 4 pound, 9 ounce, bass. Croan was fishless.

Dairy Queen special Thursday and Friday: malts and shakes in choice of flavors, 19 cents.

ARCADIA (By Nancy Brown) -- Reports circulating about town indicate that door-to-door salesmen are beginning activities again. Remember, all such salesmen must be registered with the city clerk and should be reported to the city marshal, if they have not done so. Although some salesmen have bona fide offers, it is seldom that one cannot do as well or better buying from a local firm. And when one buys at home, he knows where to go for service and satisfaction.

HIATTVILLE (By Mrs. Don Salmon) -- The Hiattville School observed its annual Play Day. Participating schools included Hiattville, Farlington, Pawnee, District 73 and Porterville.
