Kathreen H. Kunstel, 95, of rural Arcadia, died at 10:19 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 31, 2011, at the Arma Care Center at Arma, Kan.

Mrs. Kunstel was born June 22, 1916, at Arcadia the daughter of Lyle and Jean Caldwell Howard. Kathreen was a homemaker and retired school teacher who lived in rural Arcadia most of her life. She was raised in rural Arcadia and graduated from Fort Scott High School.

She later attended college in Bolivar, Mo., and Kansas State Teachers College, now Pittsburg State University, and received her teaching certificate. She taught school in Arcadia.

She married Johnnie Joe Kunstel on Oct. 4, 1940, at Arcadia, Kan. Mr. Kunstel preceded her in death June 19, 1970.

She was a member of the Cherry Grove Baptist Church, the Cherry Grove Mission Club and the Idle Hour Club.

Survivors include a daughter, Pat DeGarmo and her husband Ron of Rolla, Kan., two sons, Ken Kunstel and his wife Carol of Williamsburg, Va., and Terry Kunstel and his wife Cathie of rural Aradia, a sister, Donna Mowrey of San Diego, Calif., seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a sister, Lelia Wolf, and a brother, Kenyon Howard.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2012, at the Bedene Funeral Home at Arma with the Rev. Dr. Dale Cummins officiating. Burial was at the Sheffield Cemetery at Arcadia. The family received friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Benene Chapel at Arma and friends called after 11 a.m. Monday. The family suggests memorials to the Cherry Grove Baptist Church or the Arma Care Center. Donations may be sent to or left at the Bedene Funeral Homne, 517 E. Washington, Box 631, Arma, Kan., 66712.
