Charles Sylvester Grant Jr., 92, a former resident of rural Redfield and more recently of Chanute, Kan., died Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2011, at the Neosho Memorial Regional Medical Center in Chanute.

He was born Nov. 3, 1919, in Pawhuska, Okla., the son of Charles S. Grant Sr. and Dora Maude Wooton Grant. From the age of 10, Charles was raised by his uncle and aunt George and Lee Donia Grant.

He married Darlene Marie Ball on Oct. 14, 1942, at Fort Scott. In addition to operating his own farm, Charles also had been employed by Peerless Products for 24 years. He was a member of the Mapleton United Methodist Church and a 60-year member of the Devon Masonic Lodge No. 92. He enjoyed traveling as well as mowing his lawn and cutting wood.

Survivors include his wife, Darlene, of the home in Chanute; two sons, Kenneth Grant, Richards, Mo., and Phillip Grant and wife Connie, Belle Plaine, Kan.; two daughters, Charlene Riley and husband Lonnie, Chanute, and Mary Viel and husband Brian, Hutchison, Kan.

Also surviving are 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by an infant son, Gary Dale Grant; two brothers, John William and Sammy Grant and two sisters, Iola Mae Parkman and Opal Marie Kennett.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 31, at the Cheney Witt Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in the Dayton Cemetery.
